چکیده

0304-4017/$ – see front matter doi:10.1016/j.vetpar.2005.07.009 Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. Heartworm transmission has not been documented in Alaska and even with the importation of microfilaremic dogs, it is doubtful the climate this far north will permit maturation of infective larvae. Relocation of infected, microfilaremic dogs appears to be the most important factor contributing to further dissemination of the parasite. The ubiquitous presence of one or more species of vector competent mosquitoes makes transmission possible wherever a reservoir of infection and favorable climatic conditions co-exist. A climate that provides adequate temperature and humidity to support a viable mosquito population, and also sustain sufficient heat to allow maturation of ingested microfilariae to the infective, third-stage larvae (L3) within the intermediate host is a pivotal prerequisite for heartworm transmission to occur. Intermittent diurnal declines in temperature below the developmental threshold of 57 8F (14 8C) for only a few hours retard maturation, even when the average daily temperature supports continued development. At 80 8F (27 8C), 10–14 days are required for development of microfilariae to the infective stage. 1. Preamble

Canine and feline dirofilariasis: life cycle, pathophysiology, and diagnosis.

Infection with the intravascular parasite Dirofilaria immitis is an increasingly recognized problem in domestic dogs and cats. Heartworm infection is preventable; however, once an animal is infected, heartworm disease and potentially life-threatening complications can develop. An understanding of the heartworm life cycle and transmission season, the limitations of testing methods, and the clini...

Prevalence of naturally occurring Dirofilaria immitis infection among nondomestic cats housed in an area in which heartworms are endemic.

OBJECTIVE To determine prevalences of heartworm exposure (ie, positive heartworm antibody test results) and heartworm infection (ie, positive heartworm antigen test results or identification of mature heartworms at necropsy) among nondomestic cats housed in an area in rural North Carolina where Dirofilaria immitis is known to be endemic and among nondomestic cats housed in areas with a low prev...

Seroprevalence of Dirofilaria immitis in Cats from Liaoning Province, Northeastern China

The present study was performed to investigate the seroprevalence and risk factors for Dirofilaria immitis infection in cats from Liaoning province, northeastern China. From October 2014 to September 2016, sera of 651 cats, including 364 domestic cats and 287 feral cats (332 females and 319 males) were assessed. They were tested for the presence of D. immitis antigen using SNAP Heartworm RT tes...

OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence and severity of pulmonary arterial lesions in cats seropositive for heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) but lacking adult heartworms in the heart and lungs during necropsy. ANIMALS 630 adult cats from an animal control shelter in Florida. PROCEDURE Cats were tested for adult heartworms in the heart and pulmonary arteries and antibody against heartworms in ...

A cross sectional study on Dirofilaria immitis and Acanthocheilonema reconditum in sheepdogs in a western region in Iran

Iran is one of the endemic areas of Dirofilariasis, and also one of the most important zoonotic infections. Dirofilaria immitis causes a severe and fatal disease called heartworm disease in dog. It also produces pulmonary nodules in humans. The worm is to be investigated as a potential infection of humans and animals in various provinces in Iran. In this research, the samples were ...
